Dr. Robert Weinberg is a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He is a pioneer in cancer research whose work was critical for establishing the idea that cancer arises as a result of genetic mutations.
His laboratory is widely known for the identification and characterization of the first human oncogene, Ras, and the first tumor suppressor gene, Rb.
Recently, Dr. Weinberg’s research has focused on deciphering the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer invasion and metastasis.
His groundbreaking discoveries have revolutionized cancer biology and laid the foundation for exciting new possibilities in precision medicine.
For his seminal contributions, Dr. Weinberg has received a number of awards, including the Canada Gairdner International Award (1992), the United States National Medal of Science (1997), the Albert Einstein World Award for Science (1999), the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2013), and the AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research (2016).
