A historic university

The Université de Rennes 1 is rooted in a prestigious history of more than five centuries: it's the direct heir of the very first university in the region, founded in Nantes in 1461 by François II, Duke of Brittany. Officially dissolved in 1793, the Duke's university gave way in 1808 to an independent, secular imperial university based in Rennes and covering the western regions.
