FRENCH LANGUAGE SUPPORT FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Foreign students who intend on studying in France need to have a good knowledge of the French language before coming over. On your arrival in Rennes, you will be given the opportunity to improve your French language proficiency.
Free French language support classes
Foreign students registered at the University of Rennes-1 within the framework of an exchange programme are entitled to 44 hours of free French language support classes for a duration of nine weeks:
- From October to December for students enrolled for the first semester or for the entire academic year
- From February to May for students enrolled for the second semester
The classes will be taught at Rennes’ international centre of French studies for foreigners (CIREFE). Students are organised in homogeneous groups after their French proficiency level has been determined. The French proficiency tests will be held as follows:
- Mid-September for classes beginning in October
- Mid-January for classes beginning in February
In order to benefit from the free classes, students must:
- Duly complete and sign the registration form before sending it to their international coordinator at the university of Rennes-1 for validation imperatively before mid-September. The registration form is included in the information package sent to students before the university’s summer break.
- Prove that the French classes form an integral part of their curriculum and represents 5 ECTS credits (see learning agreement)
- Attend classes regularly and pass the end of semester exams

Intensive courses of French as a foreign language (FLE) are offered by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs via its embassy (French Cultural Cooperation and (CCF) or Military Cooperation and Defense (CMD)), in the students’ home countries.
