Digital information

What is the digital library?

It consists in a number of online electronic resources that are freely available to the students, faculty members, staff and researchers of the University of Rennes 1 through the Library Community Information Service.

How does it work?

From any Internet-connected computer, from the university campus, from home, from a Point Études (Study Corner), a cybercafé, or any other remote place, through the Digital Workspace (ENT), the digital library enables its users to identify, locate and access the documents necessary to academic curricula and research works online.

What is it made of?

The digital library offers various resources and tools of different types:

  • databases (whether thematic or multidisciplinary);
  • multidisciplinary e-journals;
  • e-books;
  • catalogs and research tools or information browsers;
  • faculty publications;
  • learning resources.

And coming soon:

  • student essays, training reports and theses;
  • research works, laboratory notebooks, preprints of scientific papers;
  • management literature.

Databases

Bibliographic databases give access to references (precise indications that will permit to find the origin of the citation) for books and articles from periodicals.

Full-text databases give access to full-text documents.

Combined databases give access to references, abstracts and full-text documents.

Last, factual databases give access to statistics, economical data, law material, etc.

Multidisciplinary electronic journals

E-journals give access to full-text documents.

The University has subscribed to a wide array of online periodicals delivered by the multidisciplinary publishers Blackwell, Elsevier, Kluwer, Springer and Wiley.

Users will find all full-text current issues of online periodicals as well as back issues going back to 1995 or 1997: each publisher provides a keyword-based search engine that gives access to all the articles available in the periodicals.

E-books

The University has purchased a large number of e-books from various publishers or vendors (including Springer, Wiley, Karger and NetLibrary). All these resources may be accessed off-campus through your personal Digital Workspace (ENT).

Catalogs and information search tools

The Library catalog presents all the documents, periodicals and theses available in the various libraries of the university information network.

An « A to Z » directory shows each and every title of the 2,745 paper periodicals and of the 13,650 online periodicals or documents.

The Open J-gate web portal gives access, through a keyword-based search function, to 3,000 charge-free full-text periodicals.

Electronic publications of the University

The University of Rennes 1 is currently working upon the digitization and online delivery of all its productions. They will soon be available through the ENT (Digital Workspace).

At first, the work in progress will only deal with the learning resources, but this process will soon include all the mémoires and reports issued by the students, the theses, research papers, laboratory notebooks, preprints of scientific works and, eventually, all the documents produced by the university management.
